Kiwi Chef Fires Up at Vdara Hotel, Las Vegas

January 04th, 2010 | Category: Uncategorized

January 3, 2010
It’s one of the most anticipated hotel openings of 2010 but the new Vdara Hotel holds a special place for Martin Heierling. A favourite on the Kiwi culinary scene, Vdara’s new executive chef is at the helm of one of the hottest restaurants in the new $9.2 billion dollar CityCenter complex on the famous Las Vegas strip.
Heierling has amassed an impressive culinary resume on his path to Vdara Hotel & Spa. Silk Road, inspired by its ancient trade route namesake, and Bar Vdara, a hip lobby lounge, bring culture and flair into Heierling’s first endeavor as executive chef of a hotel food and beverage program.
After a three-year apprenticeship in Germany, Heierling joined the team at the renowned Michelin Two-Star restaurant, Schwarzer Adler, performing an array of kitchen duties.
Then it was off to Switzerland and the kitchens of Zurich’s acclaimed seafood restaurant Hummer & Austerbar. As the Chef Tournant, Heierling learned his way around the kitchen, including the ever-enticing pastry department.
In 1993 at the age of 23, Heierling joined the Sheraton Hotel group in Auckland, followed by a position at the venerable Badrutt’s Palace in St. Moritz. From there he set sail, literally, as one of the chief cooks on the opulent Royal Yacht Lady Moura, at the time the largest private yacht in the world. More of a landlubber,
Heierling returned to Auckland as sous chef in the fine dining room, Partington’s, at the Sheraton Hotel Towers.
After eyeing a brochure describing Lespinasse as the ultimate in four-star New York City dining, Heierling contacted Executive Chef Gray Kunz, who not only hired the young cook, but would become Heierling’s greatest culinary mentor. The lessons learned in this well-run kitchen would stay with Heierling forever.
Heierling’s love of New Zealand beckoned and Heierling returned to the warm embrace of his family as well as the country’s food and culture. He took a position at the critically acclaimed Restaurant Essence, Auckland’s Best New Restaurant for 1998, where Heierling worked under New Zealand’s best-known chef, Michael James.
But the bright lights of Las Vegas beckoned and the European-born-and-trained Heierling accepted a position at Las Vegas’ most famous and beloved resorts – Bellagio.
At Bellagio, Las Vegas’ first AAA Five-Diamond resort and casino, Heierling opened Sensi, which offers four complementary cuisines: Italian, Asian, American Grill and seafood specialties, in which quality, purity and freshness prevail in every creation. Sensi received a 2007 AAA Four-Diamond Award and a 2007 Gayot.com 16-point rating out of a possible 20.
Heierling has now expanded his culinary creations across cultures as Executive Chef of Vdara. Silk Road, Vdara’s signature restaurant, inspired by the ancient trade route spanning from Venice to the Far East, utilizes subtle spices and exotic ingredients to create a recognizable and unique Mediterranean fusion cuisine. Bar Vdara, the eclectic lobby lounge located in the center of Vdara, offers small appetizers and radiates sophistication and surprise with whimsical touches like outdoor swings, light-enhancing sculptural screens and a curved reflecting pool.
Heierling is thrilled with the path his career has taken and credits his willingness to take culinary risks that brought him to where he is today.

Nashville Unplugged: The Story Behind the Song in Vegas

January 04th, 2010 | Category: Uncategorized

December 29, 2009
Featuring David Lee Murphy and Rob Crosby
Venue: Ovation
Genre: Country
Date: Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at 8 p.m.
Doors at 7:15 p.m. featuring “Songs from a Hat”
Ticket Prices: FREE
Artist Info: Aptly called Nashville Unplugged, this show is based on the concept of getting to know what’s behind the song, similar to the famed Bluebird Café in Nashville.
Each month features a songwriter who goes through the process of what went into writing a particular song and then performs it at the show. January’s featured songwriters are David Lee Murphy and Rob Crosby. Murphy is both a singer and songwriter, having written his own songs “Dust on the Bottle” and “The Road You Leave Behind” as well as for other artists, including Kenny Chesney’s “Living in Fast Forward” and Jason Aldean’s “Big Green Tractor.”
Crosby is the other featured songwriter and has written the songs “Concrete Angel” for Martina McBride and “Holdin’ a Good Hand” for Lee Greenwood.
Each month is hosted by singer/songwriters Brian McComas who wrote and sang “99.9% Sure (I’ve Never Been Here Before)” and Aaron Benward of Blue County who wrote and sang “Good Little Girls.” Another fun aspect of Nashville Unplugged is “Songs from a Hat” where guests that arrive between 7:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. can make up a title to a song and place the suggestion in a hat. The songwriters will pick one title from that hat and then pen a song throughout the course of the evening, to be performed at the end.
Must be 21 years and older

The Temptations at The Orleans Showroom

January 04th, 2010 | Category: Uncategorized

December 29, 2009
January 22-24
Las Vegas—For more than 40 years, The Temptations have shined as pioneers of popular music with decades of smash hits and sold-out performances. Otis Williams, Bruce Williamson, Terry Weeks, Ron Tyson and Joe Herndon bring classic Motown back to The Orleans Showroom January 22, 23 and 24 starting at 8 p.m. each evening.
The Temptations are central characters in the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temptations began their musical career in Detroit in the early ‘60s. In 1964, Smokey Robinson wrote and produced “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” the first major hit for The Temptations. An avalanche of hits followed, including “My Girl,” “It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep” and “I Wish It Would Rain.”
Beyond their fabulous singing, The Temptations became known for smooth-stepping and flawless presentations. The Temptation Walk became the staple of American style, flair, flash and class.
When the ‘60s and ‘70s turned political, The Temptations got serious.
They changed their tone, dress and music with smoldering hits as “Runaway Child,” “Cloud Nine,” “I Can’t Get Next To You,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” and “Psychedelic Shack.”
The Temptations explosion continued in the ’80’s with their appearance on Motown 25 in 1983, and roared into the ’90’s with the NBC mini-series in 1998 that chronicled the group’s early days and rise to fame, earning them a coveted Emmy Award.
Tickets are available now and are priced from $34.95, plus tax.
Tickets can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 702.365.7075 or visiting www.orleanscasino.com

America On Sale – Says Jetsave

January 04th, 2010 | Category: Uncategorized

December 26, 2009
Hotel rooms marked down to bargain basement levels, two-for-one restaurant meals and flights at low, low rates have between them helped to shield UK holidaymakers from the impact of the plummeting pound in 2009 and kept travel to America – particularly Florida – afloat, according to US specialist Jetsave (0871 664 0293/ www.jetsave.com ).
“At a time when the sterling exchange rate could have led to soaring costs for families travelling to Florida, it seems as through America decided to put out the sale signs. As a result we were able to peg – or even lower – holiday prices and this has meant that Florida, the great family favourite, has had a brilliant year,” said Sarah Lax, Jetsave Programme Director.
In its annual review of US holiday sales and costs, Jetsave revealed that its analysis of self-catering prices in Florida showed that a June trip to the Sunshine State could cost roughly the same as Spain. It found that a family of four could stay in a three-bedroom Orlando home with its own swimming pool, flights, free car hire and ‘kids eat free’ card covering over 50 restaurants for around £2,180. By comparison, a Spanish family holiday with accommodation in a one bedroom apartment and no extras cost £1,901.
“This is why families stay faithful to Florida,” said Sarah Lax. “Given the current economic climate, we certainly didn’t expect 2009 to be as good as last year but we were wrong. The value for money we were able to offer as a result of keen pricing by suppliers meant that our bookings went up – by around 15 per cent year on year – rather than down.”
The biggest growth recorded was for self-catering homes, which offer the opportunity for larger groups of family and friends to stay together, keeping costs to a minimum. This now accounts for around 35 per cent of Jetsave’s Florida business.
Looking ahead to 2010, the prospects look equally bright with growth still being registered on the back of a succession of keen offers.
Couples can get away to Orlando for around £500 per person for a 10-day or two week holiday in January while canny families can pick up a bargain at Walt Disney World Resort® next summer – saving up to £1,500 – if they book before the end of the year.
“But it isn’t just Florida that has been cost-cutting,” said Sarah Lax. “A glut of hotels has flooded the market in Las Vegas in recent months and this means that hoteliers are offering price levels that we haven’t seen before in Sin City. This means that we have been able to shave pounds off our escorted west coast tours in the coming months.”
