Artist Info: Originally formed in Orange County, Calif. in 1983 as the band Roxx Regimine, singer/guitarist/main songwriter Michael Sweet, drummer Robert Sweet, lead guitarist Oz Fox and bassist Timothy Gaines put a different twist on heavy metal music by pairing it with Christian lyrics. After renaming the band Stryper (“Salvation Through Redemption Yielding Peace, Encouragement and Righteousness”), they were signed by the Enigma label in 1984 and produced a full length release, Soldiers Under Command.
The album sold more than half a million copies worldwide and stayed on Billboard’s Top 200 chart for 40 weeks.
The band’s sophomore album, To Hell with the Devil, reached platinum status and was the highest chart topper of Stryper’s career, peaking in the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. “Honestly,” a ballad from that album became the most requested video on MTV that year.
The band also produced three more albums before splitting temporarily in 1992. Stryper’s second greatest hits collection titled 7: The Best of Stryper was released in 2003 and the band agreed to sporadically reunite for a “Stryper Expo.” The event became an annual occurrence and the band released Reborn in 2005. Stryper’s latest album, Murder by Pride, was released in 2009 in celebration of the band’s 25th anniversary.
