Artist Info: Raised in Ohio as John Stephens, this child prodigy could sing gospel and play the piano by age 5.
His skills on the piano were so great that by the age of 16, he moved to Philadelphia to attend college where he was then sought out to play piano on Lauryn Hill’s single “Everything Is Everything.” After graduating, he moved to New York to perform and sell his CDs in local clubs and become an in-demand musician, playing and writing for stars such as Alicia Keys, Twista, Janet Jackson and Kanye West.
In 2004, Stephens signed to West’s label and changed his name to John Legend. His first studio release, Get Lifted, was an immediate success, making its way to the Top Five of the Billboard 200 Albums of the Year chart and including the hit songs “Ordinary People” and “Used to Love U.” His debut album also earned him three Grammy Awards: Best R&B Album, Best R&B Male Vocal Performance and Best New Artist. Legend has continued to release albums, with Evolver in 2008 and most recently provided backup vocals to Hip Hop artist Rick Ross’s song “Magnificent.”
