New York City’s Kitano Introduces Tatami Suite Package
Published on: August 3, 2009
The 149-room Kitano New York is offering an authentic “Japanese escape” in the city’s only traditional Tatami Suite.
The Kitano New York offers this one-of-a-kind experience in its Tatami Suite Package, available for 100,000 Japanese Yen, or $995, per suite, per night. The Tatami Suite Package provides the aroma of the tatami mats.
Guests are presented a traditional Yukata (kimono) to enjoy during their stay, which they may take with them as a souvenir.
The sleeping quarter, connected to an authentic tea pantry, features twin beds which can be replaced with traditional futons if the guests prefer.
The suite also offers a spacious common area that measures eight tatami mats (a standard unit of measurement in Japan), as well as a traditional Japanese bathroom featuring, in accordance with Japanese culture, a large soaking tub for relaxation and separate shower for cleansing.
The Tatami Suite, which cost nearly $1 million to construct, features original works of art, traditional furnishings and cedar accents imported directly from Japan. The most significant aspect of the Kitano New York’s suite is the tatami matting which symbolizes a higher social class in the Japanese culture.
The package includes an overnight in the one-bedroom Tatami Suite; a green tea welcome amenity; a Yukata (summer kimono) take-home gift; bath experience, therapeutic Japanese Bath Salts with information on the suite’s deep soaking tub; $200 credit at The Kitano New York’s Michelin-rated Hakubai Restaurant; Japanese and/or American breakfast; passes for two to New York Sports Club; admission for two to Kitano New York Jazz Show (performances held Wednesday through Saturday evening); Japanese newspaper morning delivery; in-room Japanese television programming; early noon check-in and late 1 p.m. check-out; choice of futon or standard bed; and Shiatsu massage (available upon request for a $120 per person, per hour supplement).
