Fremont Street Experience’s “Summer of ’69: Vegas or Bust” Presents An “American Pie 4th of July”
LAS VEGAS – Fremont Street Experience presents the second annual “American Pie 4th of July” celebration with major headlining entertainment Janis Joplin’s Original Band Big Brother & The Holding Company on Friday, July 3 and The Grass Roots on Saturday, July 4.
The festivities kick off Friday, July 3 as “American Pie 4th of July” commemorates Independence Day weekend from Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5 and highlights Fremont Street Experience’s Viva Vision show, “Don McLean’s American Pie.”
Headline concerts will feature Janis Joplin’s Original Band Big Brother & The Holding Company on Friday, July 3 and The Grass Roots on Saturday, July 4.

The Grass Roots are known as one of the greatest rock bands of all time, as they charted between 1966 and 1975 as the brainchild group of songwriting duo P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri. The band also holds the all time U.S. attendance record for a concert consisting of only one act, their show for 600,000 people on July 4, 1982 in Washington D.C. Since the disbanding of the original group in 1975, early member Rob Grill and a new lineup of The Grass Roots continue to play live shows each year.
Janis Joplin’s Big Brother & The Holding Company is the definition of a true American rock band. The group formed in San Francisco in 1965 as part of the same psychedelic music scene that produced the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Jefferson Airplane and are best known as the band that featured Janis Joplin as their lead singer.
Their 1968 album, Cheap Thrills, is considered one of the masterpieces of the psychedelic sound of San Francisco, having reached Number One on the Billboard Charts and was ranked number 338 in Rolling Stone’s The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time.

Naked Boys Singing In Las Vegas

June 29th, 2009 | Category: Uncategorized

June 28, 2009
\The 100-seat Onyx Theatre, located inside The Rack clothing store in Commercial Center, 953 E. Sahara at Maryland Parkway, offers some of the most unique entertainment in a city known for entertainment. In a recent feature article in Las Vegas Weekly, Steve Friess named “anything at The Onyx” among his Top 10 Entertainment picks in the city.
The tradition continues.
In a town where topless showgirls are almost as common as video poker machines, one would be hard pressed to find any type of nudity that might be even slightly controversial, that is until now.
With the opening of the Las Vegas production of the award winning off-Broadway musical, “Naked Boys Singing,” tongues in Sin City are sure to be wagging.
The number one question I get, says Jimmy Emerson, whose company Starr Pro Productions, in conjunction with Rack Media/Onyx Theatre Group, is producing the Vegas revue, is “are the boys really naked?”
The answer,
Emerson continues, is “YES they are!”

However, cast member Nolan Christopher, who moved to Las Vegas from Chicago after performing in the Windy City’s version of Naked Boys for two years, believes that, thanks to the wonderfully written script and music, audience members quickly discover that the actors on stage also have faces…and voices.
“Ten minutes into the show, the shock wears off,” Emerson states, “and the comedy and passion of the piece take over.”
Under the direction of Jimmy’s brother, Hank Emerson, and the choreography of Brad Barnes, who has been associated with the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes and the national touring company of Cats, Naked Boys Singing, which has been running for 10 years in New York. and has played in most major cities around the world, lures in the audience with the guise of seeing attractive men bare it all.
The catch is, when no one is looking, Naked Boys Singing slaps you in the face with a mixture of comedy and, as cast member Paul Pratt puts it, “Honesty.” Mr. Pratt, whose theatrical credits are nearly as extensive as his talents, explains, “You can’t hide anything when you’re naked.”
Luckily, the seven talented cast members, accompanied by pianist Spencer Baker, will be exposing much more than their bodies.
In a 90-minute, 16-song presentation, they will also be exposing their gifts of song, dance, acting and comedy, when Naked Boys Singing premiers tonight at 10 p.m. in the Onyx Theatre. Ongoing show times are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 10 p.m., through July 4.
Tickets are $30 and can be purchased either by phone, at the door, or online at www.onyxtheatre.com
For reservations or additional information, call the Onyx at (702) 732-7225.

Vegas Uncork’d

June 29th, 2009 | Category: Uncategorized

June 14, 2009
Special feature by Linda Lane, Jetsetters Magazine Entertainment Editor.
In a letter from Bon Appetit editor-in-chief Barbara Fairchild she welcomes everyone to Vegas Uncork’d by saying: “This weekend’s events brings the magazine to life and showcases Las Vegas as one of the world’s top culinary destinations. To informative workshops to exclusive gala dinners, Bon Appetit editors have come together with some of the world’s most talented chefs to bring you center stage and indulge in the best the city has to offer.”
Beginning Thursday May 7th with a series of receptions and dinners at Payard Patisserie & Bistro, Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill, Rao, Bradley Ogden, and Guy Savoy – all located at Caesars Palace – food and wine enthusiasts had a chance to meet their culinary heroes.
And, after a long evening of delicious food and wine pairings guests were hosted by Chefs for Three Square at Pure Night Club.
If dancing wasn’t your thing, you could venture across the street to L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon at the MGM Grand from 11:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. for Theater in the Kitchen.
Friday featured workshops and culinary conversations, but the hottest ticket in town was the Vegas Uncork’d Grand Tasting from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. around Caesar’s colossal neo-Roman pools.
What seemed like thousands of locals and visitors spent $150 each to sample offerings from some of the world’s most iconic chefs. When I arrived at 7 pm the line to get in snaked all the way through the casino and past the Appian Way shops.
Considering the number of “sale” signs on the upscale shop windows, the crowd foretold signs of a financial up-swing. Proving that people will spend money to satisfy their taste buds and their culinary appreciation, nearly 100 booths had been set up around the Herculean perimeter. Among the treats were L’Atelier de Joel Robochon, Bobby Fley giving a cooking demonstration for Mesa Grill, Chateau Montelena Winery, Crafsteak, Shibuya, Rao’s, Payard Patisserie & Bistro, Emeril Lagasse’s Table 10, and so many more. Even though the tastes were two to three bites, one had to be selective. The BLT Burgers were mini-burgers, and by the time I got to them I could only listen to other people’s critiques.
The book signing table featured celebrity chefs: Hubert Keller from Fleur de Lys, Rick Moonen from RM Seafood, and Mary Sue Milliken from the Border Grill; Richard Sandoval from Isla at Treasure Island, Tom Colicchio from Craftsteak, Daniel Boulud of Daniel Boulud Brasserie, Jean Joho from the Eiffel Tower, Cat Cora, Executive Chef at Bon Appetit, and composer/musician/wine maker David Foster. Other celebrities shared their own brand of delicious. Danny DeVito’s Limoncello captured the essence of the Italian liqueur, while Kyle Maclachlan, the Desperate Housewives star could be seen chatting and sipping a glass of his Pursued By Bear wine.
Fortunately, I spotted an empty chair – there were only a few tables scattered around the pools – and I joined Desiree and Jeff Engler and Vicki Waked. Vicki’s talented husband, Daniel Waked, head chef at Nero’s Steak and Seafood at Caesar’s was busy at his booth. I made a point of tasting his melt-in-your-mouth short ribs.
You could say I ate my own notes because, when I arrived at my desk I had a press kit, but no notes. Going from memory is not easy when you’ve sampled dozens of unusual, beautifully presented taste treats. Bon Appetit named Las Vegas one of the top five restaurant cities in the U.S., and Travelocity ranked the city second among the world’s top gourmet destinations.
Vegas Uncork’d is a spectacular event. If you love food – you don’t even have to be a foodie – and you count award-winning chefs among those people you would like to meet, emulate or just sample their creations, this is an event worth attending yearly.
