Yes, Las Vegas has Culture
Yes, Las Vegas has Culture
October 2, 2008. Paris, London, Berlin, Barcelona…Las Vegas? When you think of top cultural destinations the former all exude a certain sophistication that many don’t associate with Las Vegas. However if culture is all about fine wine and dining, art galleries, world class shows and entertainment, then Las Vegas has it all. To the surprise of many, in recent years Las Vegas has secured its place on the cultural map. From the highbrow to the kitschy, you can bet on the destination to deliver a well-rounded dose or art and culture.Bellagio Gallery of Fine ArtThe Bellagio was the first resort on the Las Vegas Strip to house a gallery of fine art, showcasing everything from Koons to Kandinsky. The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art presents exhibitions from around the world. Currently the gallery is home to American modernists such as Georgie O’Keefe, Stuart Davis, Marsden Hartley amongst others.
Liberace Museum
Not quite Monet but equally as colourful is the Liberace Museum. You don’t have to be a fan of the legendary entertainer to be blown away by this extensive collection of ‘Mr Showmanship’s’ belongings including rare antiques, his eccentric wardrobe, pianos and custom cars. Perhaps the best examples of how over-the-top the entertainer was is the white and gold piano shaped ring complete with 260 individually set diamonds or his hand-painted red, white and blue Stars and Stripes Rolls Royce.
For wine lovers: Le Vin fantastique
If your idea of a civilised, cultured afternoon is sipping fine wine than the Wine Cellar at the Rio Suites Hotel and Casino is for you. With 50,000 bottles valued at more than US$10 million the collection includes rare pieces like a bottle of 1800 Madeira from the cellar of Thomas Jefferson valued at a whopping US$2 million. The Australian Penfolds Grange also makes an appearance at the cellar which has 100 wines available by the glass and specialises in private wine tasting seminars and wine tasting parties and dinners.
