Hakuna Matata – The Lion King still roars at Mandalay Bay
February 5, 2010
Forget the recession and have a Hakuna Matata evening with an exquisite and colorful performance of the Lion King at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
The Pride of Mandalay Bay, with music by Elton John and Tim Rice – how can the pride’s youthful cub Simba go wrong. With exceptional staging and soulful drumming, Simba’s uncle Scar assures that the naïve lion cub is denied the throne as Lion King after Simba’s father, Mifasa dies violently in the elephant graveyard.
Simba is outcast and for years wanders in the jungle with his new mates, an adamant warthog and spooky cheetah. As an adult Simba roams the perimeter of the Pridelands until he finds out the truth about the death of his father – and his uncle Scar.
Will Simba ascend to the throne of the Pride Rock? Will he recapture the love of his live, Nala? Will the oracle of the Rafiki Tree be fulfilled?
I exceptionally enjoyed the staging of the falling water in the gorge scene and the colorful silhouettes of the rhythm of the wildlife across the savannas, and the adroit reticulating giraffes. The humor of Rafiki was most delightful, played by Buyi Zama, who has won numerous international awards for her singing.
The puppetry and dance sequences are choreographed by many behind-the-scenes Tony Award winners and nominees. With the music sequences woven into the story by exceptional singers and dancers, The Lion King is sure to delight all members of the family.
The Disney Theatrical Production is certain to take your mind off the recession, because after all, Hakuna Matata in Swahili basically means “no problems”.
For a full version feature with colorful photos, please read the Jetsetters Magazine feature about The Lion King at Mandalay Bay.
Disney’s The Lion King—now in its twelfth sold-out year on Broadway—opened in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay on May 15, 2009.
Worldwide, The Lion King is the winner of over 40 major awards, including: six 1998 Tony Awards, including Best Musical; eight Drama Desk Awards; six Los Angeles Ovation Awards; six New York Outer Critics Circle Awards; three Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards; two Laurence Olivier Awards; the London Evening Standard Award for 1999 Theatrical Event of the Year; the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Musical; a 1998 Theatre World Award; the Astaire Award for Outstanding Choreography; a Drama League Award; and a 1999 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Show Album.
Director Julie Taymor became the first woman in Broadway history to win the Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical. Taymor, along with Michael Curry, created hundreds of masks and puppets for The Lion King. Choreography is by Garth Fagan, scenic design is by Richard Hudson, costume design is by Julie Taymor and lighting design is by Donald Holder.
The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed the animated film and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the screenplay for The Lion King. The score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from the animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice, additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer.
Tickets can be purchased by visiting the Mandalay Bay Box Office online at
www.mandalaybay.com/entertainment
Specials that are offered with your Lion King ticket stub while at the Mandalay Bay include:
Receive 20% off at Lupo from your total restaurant check when you present your Lion King ticket sub to your server.
The menu at Trattoria del Lupo is inspired by the regions of Rome, Tuscany, and Emilia-Romagna. The Wolfgang Puck restaurant at Mandalay Bay has an innovative touch that includes gamberetti e facioli, sautéed shrimp with rosemary and garcis accented white beans, osso buco, slow-braised veal shank with ricotta gnocchi and broccolini; and zappole, a ricotta doughnut with vanilla and caramel dipping sauces.
The spacious bar surrounds a wine room; the indoor patio is ideal for people watching.

KENNY CHESNEY at the Joint in Vegas
February 5, 2010
THE JOINT, BY ROGUE
Friday, May 14th and Saturday, May 15th at 8pm
Friday, July 2nd and Saturday, July 3rd at 8pm
Tickets start at $150
Kenny Chesney may be taking the year off from one of his giant tours, but Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas has country music’s biggest ticket-seller for four shows in its premiere rock ‘n’ roll venue The Joint.
Easily the most intimate opportunity to see the man who’s won four consecutive Academy of Country Music and four Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year Awards, the Hard Rock has over a third of Chesney’s live appearances in 2010.
The shows – May 14th and 15th and July 2nd and 3rd -
bring Chesney, the face of Corona Extra, back to The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas, where he was part of the opening weekend which also included Paul McCartney, Bon Jovi and the Killers.
For the man who’s used to rocking close to 60,000 people, the chance to be in a venue where the farthest seat from the stage is merely 155 feet away appeals to the man known for his unannounced Keg in the Closet tours of college and beach bars.

Dice commented, “The Hilton is known for having the Kings of Entertainment. Elvis, The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, and a who’s who of the world’s top entertainers. And now, they have me, The Undisputed Heavyweight Comedy King.”
Dice added, “I’ve done the Elvis showroom before, but now I’ve made the decision to make Vegas a more permanent gig, the Shimmer Room is the perfect place to be.”
In closing, Dice remarked, “Don’t forget that The Hilton is an institution. And let’s face it…anyone who has heard my act knows that an institution is exactly where I belong.”
Andrew Dice Clay has made a career out of being the most outrageous and dangerous comic of his time. He has shocked audiences and broke the rules with a never before seen style of hardcore comedy which has never been equaled to this day.
His rise to fame has been called meteoric and unparalleled with countless sold-out arena tours across the country including multiple nights at Madison Square Garden, multi gold & platinum selling albums, starring roles in films including the cult classic The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, and countless TV specials.
And who could forget the Diceman’s “lifetime ban” from MTV because of his “profane language and offensive jokes” at the Video Music Awards? When he released his debut album, Dice, the parental label dispensed with its usual statement and simply stated, “Warning: This album is offensive.” Therefore, it is fair to say, Andrew Dice Clay is proud to be America’s most controversial comic of all time.
Once again, Dice promises audiences and the Hilton that he will put the SIN back in the City.
Tickets for Andrew Dice Clay go on sale Saturday, January 30, at 10 a.m. General admission tickets are $49.99,

Stratosphere Show to Feature Former Mobster Frank Cullotta
February 3, 2010
Former Las Vegas mobster and hit man Frank Cullotta will present the “Mob Chronicles” in the Stratosphere Theater of the Stars on at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18.
The one-time charity event will benefit Opportunity Village. After eight years in prison and 20 years in witness protection, Cullotta is going public with his speaking tour, “Mob Chronicles,” about the history of organized crime and his unique insights into the mob life. Joining him will be various members of law enforcement who worked for years in attempts to indict Cullotta.
He served as a key player in Tony Spilotro’s infamous Hole in the Wall Gang that ruled the Las Vegas underworld in the 1960s and ’70s. While Cullotta admits to two mob hits, he is rumored to be responsible for many more, including the “M&M Murders” in 1962.
After his arrest on burglary charges in 1981 and fearing for his own life, he turned government witness and testified before the President’s Commission on Organized Crime, resulting in the convictions of several of his former associates. The mob attempted to post Cullotta’s bail so they could carry out his hit, but police revoked the bail to protect him.
In the Martin Scorsese film “Casino,” loosely based on characters like Spilotro’s gang, Cullotta served as technical advisor and played a small role as one of the henchmen.
In 2007, he co-authored his biography, “Cullotta — The Life of a Chicago Criminal, Las Vegas Mobster and Government Witness.” General admission tickets are $35 and available through Stratosphere by calling 800 99-TOWER or Opportunity Village at 702-839-4757.
Attendees must be 21 years or older to attend.
Additionally, after the presentation, Cullotta will host a VIP Godfather Dinner for 10 guests at Stratosphere’s Fellini’s Ristorante.
For $60, guests will have the chance to converse with Cullotta.
Proceeds from this dinner will benefit Opportunity Village. Dinner includes tax and gratuity but not drinks. Opportunity Village is a not-for-profit organization that helps more than 1,300 people with intellectual disabilities to enhance their lives through job training, employment opportunities, art enrichment, recreation and advocacy.
